Graceful, powerful and seemingly suspended in motion, Wing of the Ocean captures the effortless elegance of one of the ocean’s most majestic creatures. With sweeping, sculptural lines and a sense of quiet movement, the manta ray appears to glide weightlessly through unseen currents, embodying both freedom and tranquillity.

 

Hand-carved from an exceptional piece of ancient Scottish elm burr, the sculpture celebrates one of Britain’s rarest and most visually captivating native timbers. Formed over many decades, the extraordinary burr grain creates intricate swirling patterns that echo the movement of water, making every sculpture entirely unique.

 

The inspiration behind Wing of the Ocean was to capture more than the physical form of a manta ray. Cameron sought to express the serenity and effortless grace with which these remarkable creatures move through the sea. The flowing wings appear to embrace the surrounding space, while the sculpture itself invites the viewer to pause, reflect and imagine the silent rhythm of the ocean below.

 

The manta ray glides above a dramatic chestnut burr base, whose organic forms evoke an ancient coral reef sculpted by time and tide. The striking contrast between the richly figured elm burr and the lighter chestnut creates a composition that celebrates the beauty found within nature itself. Nestled within the coral-like forms of the chestnut burr are two delicately hand-carved shells, quietly hidden as though discovered on the ocean floor. These subtle details reward closer observation, encouraging the viewer to slow down and explore the sculpture, much as one would uncover treasures beneath the sea.

 

A finely crafted solid brass tail completes the sculpture, introducing a subtle contemporary detail that complements the warmth of the timber while enhancing the manta ray’s unmistakable silhouette.

 

Every element has been meticulously shaped by hand using chainsaws, rotary tools, a Dremel and traditional palm chisels before being carefully finished with mineral oil and multiple coats of hand-applied shellac. This meticulous process enriches the depth, colour and character of the timber while ensuring the sculpture will endure for generations.

 

Wing of the Ocean is more than a sculpture—it is a celebration of movement, craftsmanship and the enduring beauty of the natural world.
