The Guardian of the Moon

 

Bathed in the quiet glow of a crescent moon, The Guardian of the Moon captures a fleeting moment of stillness between two enduring symbols of the natural world. Inspired by the silent beauty of Scotland’s ancient woodlands, this sculpture celebrates wisdom, tranquillity and the profound connection between wildlife and nature.

 

The inspiration behind this piece was to create more than a faithful representation of an owl beneath the moon. Cameron sought to evoke a feeling of peace and contemplation—a moment suspended in time. The owl and the moon appear to share a silent conversation, inviting the viewer to pause, reflect and lose themselves in the quiet beauty of the natural world. It is a reminder that nature speaks not through words, but through silence, presence and light.

 

The owl has been meticulously hand-carved from an exceptionally rare piece of ancient Scottish cherry burr, salvaged from a magnificent tree that stood beside the historic Old Drovers’ Road in Perthshire before being brought down during Storm Arwen. Rather than allowing this remarkable timber to be lost, Cameron transformed it into a lasting work of art, preserving both its story and its extraordinary natural beauty.

 

The crescent moon has been sculpted from beautifully spalted sycamore, where nature itself has created intricate markings through the unique process of spalting. These organic patterns ensure that every sculpture is entirely unique, making each piece a true one-of-a-kind work of art.

 

Supporting the composition is a hand-finished solid ash plinth, painted in a deep matte finish to provide a contemporary contrast while allowing the natural beauty and warmth of the timber to take centre stage.

 

Every element has been shaped entirely by hand using, rotary tools, a Dremel and traditional palm chisels before being carefully finished with mineral oil and multiple coats of hand-applied shellac. This meticulous process enriches the colour and depth of the wood while providing lasting protection for generations to come.

 

The Guardian of the Moon is more than a sculpture; it is a tribute to Scotland’s ancient trees, the resilience of nature and the enduring artistry of hand craftsmanship. Designed as a statement piece and future heirloom, it invites quiet reflection and celebrates the timeless dialogue between the natural world and those who take the time to truly observe it.
